L'archéologue brûle ses archives à mesure qu'il les lit : il en reçoit la seule version, selon ses aptitudes, ses a priori et ses questionnements. Cette lourde responsabilité doit le rendre attentif, au fil de son dialogue avec le terrain, à l'adéquation entre les méthodes adoptées et les situations rencontrées. Aussi doit-il rester attentif au jaillissement d'idées constamment renouvelées au cours de l'opération.
